Project Review
Having finally emerged from this month-long ordeal, I can definitely say that I don't plan on making the mistake of jumping in over my head when there's not sufficient time or resources to see it all through to its fullest. Making/playing a rhythm game may be fun, but making one based on pitch instead of beats? Certainly would not recommend it.
The biggest problem I ran into during development though (other than the many, many bugs) was properly balancing the need to have 7 unique buttons for each of the seven unique tones while still keeping things manageable for beginner players. Now, while I definitely could have done a better job of that--as you might have noticed after playtesting--I still feel as though it works alright for what it is. Granted, it's considerably more difficult than it has any good right to be, but who knows, perhaps some people are into that sort of thing.
Honestly, I learned quite a bit while working on this project, whether it was that Unity's SceneManagement tends to lead to an atrocious mess of MissingReferenceExceptions, that one can make classes that run without being instanciated, as well as that a healthy individual ought to sleep far more than I have in the past few days getting this all put together.
That being said, I'm quite happy with the way the general aesthetics of the game worked out. From the character designs to the UI layout, I feel like I improved a lot over the course of this project, and besides, it's always nice to broaden the old skill set and whatnot.
If I had more time to work on it, I'd definitely go back and improve the quality of most of the beatmaps, as well as make things even the slightest bit less daunting for new players.
